Ann Rutledge theories

This is an initial outline about the character Ann Rutledge from the TV series Damien, with bare bones details added in.  I will be expanding on this information as the series continues, based on the extant canon information presented in the show and interviews, as well as the research I conduct into the Christ mythos.

Origins

  1. Ann is the jackal reincarnated human, aka Damien’s mother brought back from the dead.
Highly unlikely, but still a valid initial consideration. [cf. Mrs. Baylock theory below]
  2. Ann is a fallen angel.
Disproven by Barbara Hershey in tweets [find links for verification]
Despite being disproven, there is still a possibility of subterfuge to allow this theory to be true. [cf. “being Sackhoffed”]
  3. Ann is a demon.
Disproven by Barbara Hershey in tweets [find links for verification]
Despite being disproven, there is still a possibility of subterfuge to allow this theory to be true. [cf. “being Sackhoffed”]
  4. Ann is human, but there is a fallen angel in her lineage, making her more than “just” human.
This is a long shot, but still entirely plausible to allow for the ruling out of the previous two options of fallen angel and demon.

Other connections

  1. Ann is the old woman in Damascus. [see below for possible cf.]
This seems to be a long shot, particularly if Ann is wholly human and not supernatural in any way.
  2. Ann is Mrs. Baylock.
This is a long shot that would involve reincarnation, much like the jackal theory above.
  3. Ann is Lilith.
Other connected options are Mahlat, daughter of Lilith and mother of Agrat, and possibly even Agrat bat Mahlat.
  4. Ann is the mother of the Christ child of the Second Coming.
Possible fathers include Damien and John.

Christ mythos parallels

  1. Mother Mary
Granted, this theory is somewhat tied to the jackal theory above, so likely a HUGE long shot, but worth considering in the emotional, esoteric sense of being his mother/maternal figure.
  2. Mary Magdalene
Seems a bit of an odd long shot, but worth entertaining, particularly in the Gnostic sense, until disproven.
  3. Judas Iscariot
Seems a bit of an odd long shot, but worth entertaining, particularly in the Gnostic sense, until disproven.
  4. John the Baptist
Possible corollary: The old woman from Damascus is John the Baptist.
  5. Simon Peter
This is entirely possible, as she could become Damien’s greatest disciple and the leader of his future church/movement. Most likely, this role will be taken over by someone else.
  6. Anne, mother of Mary new
Based on Ann’s first name. If this proves true, how is Ann the mother of the jackal that birthed Damien?
Note: This theory was original suggested by Twitter user, Hook’s Hand.

Canon Information

  1. Husband and daughter died when Ann was 20 years old. — Episode 01×04, “The Number of a Man”
